The Bioinformatics Centre, AIMIT, St Aloysius College, Beeri, Mangalore is directly sponsored by
the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India to explore the new areas of Bioinformatics in drug designing, algorithm development,
Machine Learning and NGS. The Centre was established in the year 2006 as Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet) with full
financial assistance from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India under DBT-BIF scheme. Since its birth it is actively involved in
popularizing Bioinformatics and its applications in Biological researches in Mangalore and nearby areas of Mangalore. The Centre organizes
workshops, seminars, training programmes etc. from time to time for students as well as teachers for popularization of Biology teaching
through Bioinformatics tools and also to generate awareness in Bioinformatics. Two year MSc Bioinformatics course is a thoughtful career
oriented programme which was generated as a part of this programme.
Bioinformatics is the application of Information Technology to the Biosciences with the object of collation of both
the knowledge. It is a bright new area, which refers to data mining, Machine learning and Algorithm development.
Bioinformatics stands for the development and use of computational and mathematical methods for acquiring, storing, analyzing,
retrieving and interpreting biological data to solve biological problems. This area has demand of multi-skilled researchers to work at
the interface between Information Technology and Biosciences. The application plays pivotal roles in agriculture, medicine and other
environment which are the most desirable options in the present century.
